Peace in the COVID-19 Storm

Many are currently asking questions about how the uncertainty of COVID-19 is going to affect both our immediate and long term futures. Fear and uncertainty of what comes next seems to be constant during this time, but even still, it’s essential to remember that God’s plan hasn’t changed from the initial outbreak of COVID-19 to this present moment. God is still in control.

While it can be easy to grow frustrated with how this virus is fully altering normal rhythms of life, it presents a unique opportunity to slow down and refocus our eyes on Jesus.

We live in one of the busiest times in the history of the world. But with the cancelations, closures, and postponements of school and other events, our lives have the potential to slow down for the next few weeks. This gives us the perfect time to turn our attention to our perfect Father, who loves us and knows how all of this is going to play out.

It’s easy to doubt and fear, but in a moment like this, Jesus is simply saying the same thing to us as He said to the sea when he calmed the storm in Mark 4:39, “Peace! Be still!”

In this passage, the disciples were in great fear and thus woke Jesus up. The root of the disciples’ fears most likely came because during the storm, they felt Jesus was not in control because He was asleep. We can be tempted to think the same in the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak—that God is not in control. However, Mark 4 shows quite the opposite. God is just as much in control today as He was before this virus outbreak began.

No matter your age, this is certain to be a period of time you will remember for the rest of your life. How do you want to remember this moment in history? Do you want to remember it worried, spending time binge-watching Netflix, downplaying the effects of the virus, OR seeking Jesus, His peace, proclaiming His victory, and simply being still and knowing that He is God (Psalm 46:10).

Over the next few weeks, remember:

  1. God is God.

  2. Faith conquers fear.

  3. To be still &  know HE is God.
